Ulysses
Hugh Kenner
George Allen and Unwin ISBN: 0-04-800003-5
1980

This book concentrates on the way Joyce himself teaches us to read Ulysses as he taught himself to write it; moving from the simple to the complex from the familiar to the unfamiliar, from the tight determinsim of the normative 19th century novel to the open forms compatible with the world of Picasso and Einstein, but anticipating every complex procedure with easy examples finished early. Throughout, Mr Kenner emphasises the factuality on which Joyce expended such pains. He has new things to say on a wide variety of topics, including the Homeric parallels, the slow erosion of novelistic stereotype by minute information, the role of styles in the book's latter half, the enigma of its ending.

The significance of this inconstancy in relation to the 'plot' and to the author's point of view is carefully explored throughout Ulysses...'
